Somehow I’ve still been managing to get up early. I got up at 6:30 and sat outside and had half a breakfast at the hostel. Maticc joined me around 10 and we talked about what we were going to do today. We then had Breakfast with Jade at the place we were at the day before. It's crazy how cheap everything here is; a fruit yogurt granola bowl was about $3 where a portion that size would easily be $12 in Hawaii. Jade was still having a tough time from last night and threw up in the alley I'm pretty sure. After Lunch Maticc and I went back and talked about our plans. He was supposed to check out at noon but I convinced him to stay another day here and I would join him on his way down to Pattaya the next day.
Matic went back to bed and I decided I’d set up the website for the blog for a couple hours. I’ll need to find a balance of journaling this while also being in the moment so I’m just going to have a accept that what I “publish” is not going to be good or probably even coherent sometimes (I’m not even reading it over). The point of this is just to have something for me to look back at and for my friends back home to have some idea what I’ve been up to. At 4:30 our hostel had a scheduled tour to Chinatown. I was pretty tired but this was my last day in the foreseeable future I’ll be in Bangkok so I was trying to get as much done as possible (I could see myself staying here another week and do a lot more but I need to keep going East if I want to get to all my countries).
View from the Hostel
I was late to the tour but ended up seeing them on the street and catching up. The vibe of hostels is so much different than a hotel; from the people to the way staff interact. Our tour guide Olive was the lady that ran the front desk and she acted like one of the guests. We could ask questions but she was having just as much fun as us. There was about 7 in our group and I talked to all of them but ended up talking mostly with a girl name Kim and Alex. Kim is from Maryland but lives in Australia and is roomates with another girlin our group. She was really cool and we talked about graduating in 2020 and how she spent a year backpacking through Australia during Covid as a gap year. We first stopped at Golden Mount which is when I realized I probably had an injured knee as walking up and down 100s of steps wasnt feeling too great especially after Maticc and I’s 10 mile walk yesterday. Its at this point that I realized I was kind of a mess: I ran out of Baht so another guy on the tour spotted me the 100, my phone was a 10% and both Matic, Mara and Corra were all texting me trying to meet me in Chinatown. Before Chinatown though we stopped in Little India and ate some really good Indian food at a market. I got Fried daal and Naan and it was the best indian food I’ve ever had. I had to run down the street after ordering trying to find an ATM which was also a disaster and I probably overpayed in fees but oh well…
In Chinatown, we walked past all the markets and got soysauce ice cream which was very good; kind of tasted like carmel ice cream. With about 5% left and facetiming Corra I found them and they joined us on the tour even though they wern’t from our hostel. We then went to a rooftop bar called GenZ which was really expensive but such a vibe. After about an hour our tour guide wanted to get tuk tuks back which I honestly was going to do anyways as my knee was killing me and it was probably 1.5 miles away. Kara and Corra stayed in Chinatown but we promised to meet up later; I really wanted to stay with them and explore Chinatown more but I didn't want to get stranded or have to communicate with a tuk tuk driver without our tour guide. Back at the Hostel Matic never ended up leaving for Chinatown which was probably a good thing and us and a group of 15 played drinking games (thanks Kim for the beer :) ). I talked alot with a guy named Maxim who has been traveling for the last couple week and goes home tomorrow to Sweden(?).One thing i'm realizing here is how different the American mindset of traveling is to the European one. In Europe its completely normal for someone to take a gap semester before starting Uni or during.
Corra and Mara texted and wanted to go the Khao San Road. Everyone said they were also going there but I wasn’t really looking to wait around and wanted to spend some time with Mara and Corra. I went down to their hostel and we walked together but it wasnt very long before my hostel group saw me. We joined them and spent a couple hours talking, mainly at a reggae bar. I dont remember much about who I talked to but I remember Mira and I had a good conversation. I’m still trying to go to bed halfway early so I said my goodbyes to everyone around 1:30 as I probably wasnt going to see most of them again, but the people I’m closest to (Mira, Mara, Corra, Matic and Jade) are all going to Vietnam so hopefully ill see at least a couple of them there!
