I left at 8:30 AM for the airport and Hailey Rose Drove ( Thanks again!). I decided to check my main bag, so I didn’t have to deal with the liquids requirements but guess I had to go to the check-in counter anyways because it's an international flight? Luckily there wasn’t a line because she wanted to see proof of onward travel in Thailand which is a question, I expected at Immigration in Thailand but not at the check in counter. Obviously, I didn’t so I had to say, “one second, let me have my mom send me the info” and bought a fake ticket, got the itinerary, and that worked. I almost messed up with this too by making my “return” ticket for March 15th, just two days shy of it being denied again for being too long of a stay. Thanks February for only having 28 days…
Leaving :) :( All my bags for my tip
Plane from HNL to Tokyo; A380 painted as a turtle!
Sushi at Haneda Airport
I got to the airport two hours early but was at the gate 20 minutes after getting there. The plane was very empty for an A380; probably less than 150 people for a plane that hold 500+. I ended up getting the row to myself and the row behind me so I could recline all of the seats into a bed. Food was better than any other airplane food I’ve ever had, even the business class. Landed in Tokyo Narita after 8 ½ hours where I had Sushi for Dinner which was really damn good and kind of cheap for the quantity/quality. After spending 3 or 4 hours at the gate and eating. -Written at Haneda Airport
Well the rest of the first day wasn’t as smooth but honestly a lot of fun in an “adventure” type of way. After landing in Bangkok, customs was easy enough and I converted $70 to Baht. However my mistake was not getting a SIM card at the airport. I asked but they said eSIMs were only available outside the airport and I really wanted one of those instead of a traditional one. That meant however I needed to at least get to my hostel without any type of data or Wi-Fi. Yea… sounded easy. Was not. I got a cab and after about 5 minutes of trying to explain where I wanted to go, the driver said 500 baht. More than I wanted to pay but at this point I just wanted to get going as the hostel closed check-in at 2am and it was already 1:15. Apparently he had no idea where we were supposed to be going. We ended up taking 2 hours to get there, pulling over 8 times to try and explain directions and I still ended up not at my hostel.
My main mistake here was not downloading Thai google translate however Im not sure how much that would have helped. Even after showing in landmarks in Thai that were close, giving broad road names and eventually taking his phone and putting in the directions that were in Thai and spoken to him, he still could not understand where I wanted to go. That one still confuses me. Eventually I heard him say Koah San Road and I say Take me there. I had no idea how close that was to my hostel but I remember reading that it was in the area. Finally there, I realized Kohl San Road was basically a party street with girls literally getting dragged out of bars for alcohol poisoning into ambulances.
Getting dropped off here wasn’t very helpful as I had no useable map, no data, no phone, and no idea where I was. Asking people directions was pointless and just returned in drunken mumble. Eventually I got into a burger king, pulled out my iPad which I had downloaded a map onto and used my phone compass to figure out where I was (My maps didnt show me where I was on it). By this point it was 2:30 and by the time I got to my hostel only to confirm that yes, it definitely did close at 2. I went next door to the 24 hour hostel and they were all booked, Someone was nice enough to give me legible directions to another hostel from there and along the way I found a nicer looking one and went to bed. That’s all for day one. -Written at Jam Hostel
